People choose to drink a mocktail (virgin or non-alcoholic drink) for varied number of reasons: pregnancy, designated driver, on medication, don’t like the taste of alcohol, under drinking age, personal choice, or allergic. Mocktails can be frozen, juicy, creamy, sour, sweet, hot, fizzy, spicy, or any other category just like a regular cocktail.

The most famous mocktail is called a Shirley Temple (today, people also call it a Kiddie Cocktail or a Cherry Sprite). It was named after the famous child actress from the 1930s and believed to be created by a Hollywood bartender from Chasen’s Restaurant. The Shirley Temple consisted of ginger ale and grenadine garnished with a maraschino cherry. Today most restaurants and bars don’t carry ginger ale so it’s made with Sprite/7up and grenadine and always garnished with a maraschino cherry. In the 1940s it was commercially bottled and was the only beverage that had a cherry inside the bottle. Many companies have carried the Shirley Temple Soda and it can still be found today on the Internet (and it still has the cherry inside).

If you’re ever at Walt Disney World and ask for a Mickey Mouse from a bartender or server and they will bring you a Sprite with grenadine garnished with a cherry (Shirley Temple). Sometimes they will 2 cherries and stick them on an orange slice to make Mickey ears.

The Roy Rogers is probably the second most popular mocktail. It came out in the 1950s and consists of cola and grenadine (Cherry Coke) garnished with a maraschino cherry. Roy was a clean-cut straight-laced singing cowboy with his own TV show in the 1950s.
Today, mocktails can be made with veggies (like cucumbers), herbs, non-alcoholic wine, rum extracts, flavored syrups, and just about anything else your imagination can think of.
