Juicy Drinks All Bartenders Should Know

Screwdriver

It’s said that the Screwdriver got its name from American oil-riggers working in the Middle East when they stirred this drink with a screwdriver. The year was 1950. And just like the size of the tool, it can come in many sizes depending on where you work.

Glass: Highball, however, some bars want it made in a tall Collins glass and others may want it in a short Old-fashioned glass.

1 1/2 ounces of vodka
Fill with orange juice
Mixing Method: Build.

Garnish: None. If you work in a bar with a decent budget then you’ll use an orange slice or a flag.

If you float half an ounce of Galliano on top of a Screwdriver it makes it a Harvey Wallbanger. One story is that a California surfer named Harvey would request this drink and after drinking a few he would walk into a wall.

Screwdriver/Orange Juice Family

Sloe Screw: vodka, sloe gin, and orange juice (some omit the vodka).
Sloe Comfortable Screw: vodka, sloe gin, Southern Comfort, and orange juice.
Sloe Comfortable Screw up against the Wall: vodka, sloe gin, Southern Comfort, Galliano, and orange juice.
Alabama Slammer; shooter or drink made with vodka, sloe gin, Southern Comfort, amaretto, and orange juice.
Hairy Navel: vodka, peach schnapps and orange juice.
Melon Ball: vodka, melon liqueur, and orange juice.
Bocce Ball: (BOTCH-ee) amaretto and orange juice.
Mimosa: Champagne and orange juice.

Cape Codder (Cape Cod)

The Cape Codder gets its name
from the fact that cranberries are grown near Cape Cod, MA. When harvest time rolls around in October, farmers flood the cranberry fields making the cranberries float to the top of the water.

Cranberries are one of the three fruits that are native to America. The other two are the Concord grape and the blueberry. Native Americans used cranberries for dyes. A sea captain named Henry Hall was the first to cultivate the cranberry in 1810.

Glass: Highball, however, some bars want it made in a tall Collins glass and others may want it in a short Old-fashioned or highball glass.

1 1/2 ounces of vodka
Fill with cranberry juice
Mixing Method: Build.
Garnish: Lime wedge.

Note: When someone orders a Vodka and Cranberry it does not automatically get a lime wedge. Lime wedges automatically garnish a Cape Cod. You’ll find that most people don’t know what they are talking about and if the opportunity arises then you can educate them on this.

Cape Cod/Cranberry Family

Woo Woo: vodka, peach schnapps and cranberry juice.
Scarlett O’Hara: Southern Comfort and cranberry juice.
Washington Apple: shooter or Martini made with equal parts of Crown Royal, apple Pucker, and cranberry juice.
Red Snapper: shooter made with equal parts of Crown Royal, amaretto, and cranberry juice.
Cosmopolitan: vodka, orange liqueur, cranberyy and lime juice.

Madras (MAD-dress)

A Madras is the combination of a Screwdriver and a Cape Codder without the lime.

Glass: Highball, however, some bars want it made in a tall Collins glass and others may want it in a short Old-fashioned glass.
1 1/2 ounces of vodka
Fill with equal parts of orange and cranberry juice.
Mixing Method: Build.
Garnish: None. If you are in an upscale bar then you might get an orange slice or flag.

Greyhound

Glass: Highball, however, some bars want it made in a tall Collins glass and others may want it in a short Old-fashioned glass.
1 1/2 ounces of vodka
Fill with grapefruit juice
Mixing Method: Build.
Garnish: None.

Note: Pink grapefruit juice can be used. Also, you’ll find that some people will just order a Vodka Grapefruit instead of asking for a Greyhound. If they order a Sweet Vodka Grapefruit or Sweet Greyhound then they want a little grenadine or simple syrup added.

Greyhound Family

Salty Dog; vodka, grapefruit juice and a salted rim.

Seabreeze

A Seabreeze is the combination of a Greyhound and a Cape Codder.

Glass: Highball, however, some bars want it made in a tall Collins glass and others may want it in a short Old-fashioned glass.

1/1/2 ounces of vodka
Fill with equal parts of grapefruit and cranberry juice.
Mixing Method: Build.
Garnish: Lime.

Note: Know that this drink is supposed to get just a splash of cranberry juice. However, if you make it this way, most people will send it back wanting more cranberry juice. Guests that want the splash will usually order it with the splash.

Baybreeze

The Baybreeze is also called the Hawaiian Seabreeze. When you substitute the grapefruit juice in a Seabreeze for pineapple juice you’ve made a Baybreeze.

Glass: Highball, however, some bars want it made in a tall Collins glass and others may want it in a short Old-fashioned glass.
1 1/2 ounces of vodka
Fill with equal parts of pineapple and cranberry juice
Mixing Method: Build.
Garnish: None, but if you are working in an upscale bar then you’ll probably use a pineapple slice. If you are in a nightclub then it’s common for a cherry to be dropped on top if the guest is female.

Baybreeze/Pineapple Juice Family

Pearl Harbor: vodka, melon liqueur, and pineapple juice.
Hollywood: Vodka, Chambord, and pineapple juice.
Surfer on Acid: shooter of equal parts of Jägermeister, coconut rum, and pineapple juice.
Malibu & Pineapple: Malibu rum and pineapple juice.

Fuzzy Navel

The Fuzzy Navel became extremely popular in 1984 when DeKuyper Peachtree Schnapps hit the market.

Glass: Highball, however, some bars want it made in a tall Collins glass and others may want it in a short Old-fashioned glass.

1 1/2 ounces of peach schnapps
Fill with orange juice
Mixing Method: Build.
Garnish: None, but if you are working in an upscale bar then you’ll probably use an orange slice or flag.

Fuzzy Navel Family

Hairy Navel; vodka, peach schnapps, and orange juice.

Sex on the Beach

There are about five different ways to make a Sex on the Beach. This is the original recipe. Also, some recipes call for more vodka than peach schnapps, but I’ve found that it tastes better with equal amounts.

Glass: Tall, but you’ll have to use what your establishment want you to.

1 ounce of vodka
1 ounce of peach schnapps
Fill with equal parts of cranberry and orange juice
Mixing Method: Build.
Garnish: None, but if you are working in an upscale bar then you’ll probably use an orange slice or flag.

Note: By now, you can see how these juicy drinks are closely related. This drink is just a Fuzzy Navel and a Cape Codder combined without the lime. Other Sex on the Beach recipes add melon and/or raspberry liqueur and pineapple juice.

Sex on the Beach Family

Redheaded Slut; peach schnapps. Jägermeister, and cranberry juice.

Cosmopolitan (Cosmo)

The Cosmopolitan was probably the most popular cocktail of the late 20th century. It’s said that Cheryl Cook from Florida first served it and Toby Cecchini tweaked it. Just when the drink was beginning to die off, the hit TV show Sex in the City skyrocketed its fame worldwide during the first part of the 21st century.

Glass: Martini
1 1/2 ounces of citrus vodka
1/2 ounce of Cointreau (QWAN-trow)
1/4 ounce limejuice
1/2 ounce cranberry juice
Mixing Method: Shake and strain or stir and strain.
Garnish: Lime wedge, lime wheel, lemon twist, or lemon wheel are the most common.

Note: The Cosmo is really just a Cape Codder and a KamiKaze. There are some modifications like the infused vodka, the triple sec upgrade to Cointreau, and less cranberry juice used. Many bars across the nation have their own way of making this cocktail. Some swear that you should only use fresh squeezed lime juice and splash the cranberry to color it pink while others will use a full ounce of cranberry juice. Again, it’s what the guest wants.

Tequila Sunrise

They say that the Tequila Sunrise was created in Mexico in the 1950s for welcoming tourists to Acapulco and Cancun. They also say that a Mexican bartender who stayed up all night drinking with his friends was found in the bar when the boss walked in the next day. His explanation to the boss is that he wanted to concoct a drink that looked like the sun was rising. The drink gained popularity again in the 1970s when the Eagles released a song of the same name.

Glass: Highball
1 1/2 ounces of tequila
Fill with orange juice
Pour in 1/2 ounce of grenadine and it will sink to the bottom
Mixing Method: Build.
Garnish: None.

Tequila Sunrise Family

Freddy Fudpucker; tequila, orange juice and grenadine.

Bloody Mary

The development of the juice extractor happened in 1921 and tomato juice hit the market the very same year. It’s said that Paris bartender Pete Petiot mixed up some vodka and tomato juice. He named it after a Chicago bar, Bucket of Blood and a regular named Mary. He then took his Bloody Mary to the King Cole Bar in New York City and embellished it with pepper, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco, lemon, lime and raw horseradish and sold it as a hangover cure. The name changed to Red Snapper, then Morning Glory, and then back to Bloody Mary. This cocktail is also considered a classic.

Glass: Highball. Many glasses are used for this drink.
1 1/2 ounces of vodka
Fill with Bloody Mary mix
Mixing Method: Build then roll. Do not shake.

Garnish: Bloody Marys win hands down for the most garnishes that can be used. They can include: celery; green olives; scallions; cherry tomatoes; jumbo cocktail shrimp; rimmed with salt; Cajun spice or celery salt; pickled okra; pickled green beans; pickled asparagus; lime; lemon; pepperoncini pepper; carrot; dill pickle; beef jerky; or oyster on the half shell. They can also include hot sauce, Worcestershire, wasabi, raw horseradish, beef bouillon, chili powder, white pepper, bitters, and a splash of Guinness.

My secret ingredient is A-1 steak sauce. Every single person always makes a comment on the taste. I’ve even had guests from the restaurant side come hunt me down asking about the mix I used. When guests are at the bar, I have a small platter filled with goodies such as; Worcestershire, hot sauce, bitters, salt & pepper, and ramekins of lemon and lime wedges. The look on a guests face when you set the small platter next to their drink is priceless. They feel so pampered.

Bloody Mary Family

Red Snapper: gin and bloody mary mix (not to be confused with the hip-hop Red Snapper made with cranberry juice).
Bloody Bull: vodka, bloody mary mix and beef bouillon.
Bloody Caesar: vodka and clamato juice.
Bloody Maria: tequila and bloody mary mix.
Red Beer: tomato juice and beer (bloody mary mix and beer is popular too).
