FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN A BARTENDER RESUME

KNOW
My style of bartender resumes have been time-tested.They've been through many transformations and tweakings with the sole intention of grabbing immediate attention. And from the feedback I get from clients, they meet that expectation.

About 20 years a ago a guy came into the bar where I was working and handed me a resume with a Martini glass on it to accompany his application. After he left I stood there just staring at it because I had never seen that approach before. My first thought was, "Wow, this guy is serious and proud of his profession."

It left a lasting impression with me, so from that day on I did they same. Every time, every where, every manager remembered the girl with the cool resume. And most of them passed it around because when I'd show up for an interview everyone would recognise me and say, "Hey, you're that girl with the great resume!"

Bartending is looked at as a blue collar job in America and a resume isn't expected. Of course it's not like a normal business resume and it shouldn't be.

If I could say only 11 words about it I'd say, You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.

UNDERSTAND
Please understand that my prices are 3 times lower than standard resume services. Understand that my services do not include assisting you with every detail; writing, rewriting, and embellishing of your resume. You simply provide ALL the resume information in an organized (and practically typo-free manner) then I take your provided information and apply it to the resume style you choose. If you need further consulting or assistance please contact me so that I can determine the additional cost.

Please send ALL your info at one time and not in parts spread throughout several emails.
Take a minute and get organized.

TIME FRAME
If you are very organized with what you send me then I can have your resume ready in one hour (if I'm sitting at the computer). Longest turn around would be between 12-24 hours, but this mainly depends on your communication with me. I will begin emailing you PDF drafts of your resume until you approve it (Make sure you have the FREE Adobe Reader downloaded on your computer. You can get it here.). Upon approval of the resume, simply burn your file on a CD for safe keeping. Take or email the PDF file to a printer. I suggest having it printed on a color laser printer for the best quality. This should only cost 50 cents to $1. I don't recommend home printers because they don't print professionally crisp.

FUTURE CHANGES
I understand that people change jobs, get a new phone #, etc. so I allow one FREE future change up to 50 words. This does not include restructuring the entire resume for you.

As for a file for you to make future changes, know that this is possible. I use Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop so you will need to have those graphic programs. Just request the original file. Also, another option is to request the blank style design so that you can bring it into Illustrator or Photoshop and create your resume any way you want.

Changes made by me cost $30 after your one free change. This includes if you want me to transfer your resume to a new resume style/design.

1. GATHER ALL YOUR INFO

1. The resume style # you want.
2. Your resume info
• The exact name you want to use.
• Contact info. (Phone # and email address. Write the home address on on the application.)
• Bar Experience (fake or real) with city, state and years. (Months go on the application.)
• Other Experience (fake or real) with city, state and years. (Months go on the application.)
• Education--if any--with city, area of study and years.
3. An image where nothing is obstructing your head and neck. I can crop out other objects. I highly recommend sending an image because managers have tons of aps & resumes on their desk and do not remember the faces that go with them. Seeing your face on the resume will help him remember you. As they say, a photo is worth a thousand words. (Please do not send me 2+ photos asking me to choose one. Send the photo you wish to use. The bigger the better.)

Jeffrey Morgenthaler

I love the job/establishment descriptions from Jeffrey Morgenthaler. He says, "When you’re filling out the job description for each establishment you’ve worked in, I feel that it’s more important to convey a sense of what sort of place it was, rather than recounting what you did there. Face it, you did the same thing at every job: served customers, worked the cash register, and cleaned. I don’t care. What I want to know as a bar manager is what sort of establishment you worked in, as I haven’t had the chance to visit every bar and restaurant in the country. Was it a dive bar? Fine dining? Nightclub? Let me know. Some of us in fine dining are actually looking for people who come up from high-volume chain restaurants. You never know, so dont’ be shy, and do be as specific as possible."

Here are some examples:

Head Bartender • El Vaquero • Portland, OR • 2005 - Present
Head bartender. Tapas and Steaks. Huge menu and an enormous Spanish wine list, complimented by my menu of classic cocktails - with a twist. Priced OLCC catalog, set up Micros POS, trained a hardworking staff of bartenders, barbacks and cocktail servers, and conducted liquor classes for the staff of two restaurants. Fast-paced atmosphere, Disco Night on Thursdays, and a very demanding thirtysomething clientele.

Bartender/Waiter • Marche • Seattle, WA • 2001 - 2005
Bartender/waiter. Buttoned-up black-tie service for the pre-theater crowd. Northwest cuisine done in the French bistro tradition, washed down with bottles of Pinot Noir. Huge French and Pacific Northwest wine list, dessert crowd at ten, open kitchen and bistro-style zinc-topped bar.

Bartender • Chanterelle • Olympia, WA • 2002
Bartender. Full-service, fine continental restaurant. Early crowd, small kitchen, tough German chef, fast pace.

Bartender • The Vet’s Club • Portland, OR • 2000
Bartender. Huge thirty-five seat bar, and the hottest club in town. Late nights, stiff drinks, intense fast pace, two bartenders and a lot of smoky blues.

Bartender • The Tiny Tavern • Portland, OR • 1996-2000
My first bartending job. Four years, five nights a week in one of the toughest bars in town. Famous chili, pitchers of Olympia, loud music and a lot of smoke.

For the most part in America, bartending is a blue-collar high-turnover position that is looked at as a transient position in America, so I have no problem embellishing little things here and there. It’s not brain surgery or something else that could cause another harm. If you have tended bar for at least a year then you pretty much know the mechanics of it.

If you need a little embellishing then I would make it appear that you've been in the biz as soon as it was legal for you to be in your state. I also suggest making it appear that you have worked your way up in the food and beverage biz. So a place of employment from age 16-21 should be progressive; host/busboy/server/barback/cocktail server. If you’ve moved from another state then this is a perfect chance to include an embellishment.

Keep in mind that this resume alone will not get you the job, but It will be the first impression of you. And as I said before, you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. Combine this attention-getting resume with a walk of confidence, good eye contact, a great handshake, and awesome smile housed in a well groomed body then 9 times out of 10 the job will be yours. I suggest paper clipping (or stapling) this resume to the front of the application you'll be filling out. When you turn it back in to the person ask if the manager will be able to speak to you today. Most times, trying between 2-4 in the afternoon is the best chance to get an interview.

I
f you have more questions that aren’t covered here just ask me. email me

Cheers!,
Miss Charming

P.S. I have so much info for you as a bartender in my Bartender Lounge.
There are over 1300 Bartender Q & A’s to look through, Bartender Tips & Hints, FAQ's, History to learn, the Best Bar Books to own, and so much more.

Also, I highly recommend that you pick up a copy of my latest book, Miss Charming's Guide for Hip Bartenders and Wayout Wannabes. It's the only bartender book on the market that really tells you what you need to know to be a bartender or better bartender. It's pretty cheap right now on amazon.com. The reviews have been awesome from the top bar & cocktail people in the business (Dale DeGroff, Tobin Ellis, Gary Regan, Dean Serneels, and Tom Cruise's bartender instructer for the movie cocktail, JB Bandy).
